Time tracking software for lawyers that writes the entry you forgot to record
Jural turns what you already wrote during the day, work notes, sent emails and the activity on your matters, into draft time entries with a narrative, a duration and a task code. You approve, edit or discard each one, then export CSV or LEDES 1998B to your billing system. The hour you spent on a call and never wrote down gets a second chance before the month closes.
Draft entries from work that already happened
Most unbilled time is not lost because the work was not done. It is lost because the entry was reconstructed on Friday from a calendar that does not show the twenty minutes spent on a revised settlement term sheet. Jural reads the signals inside the workspace and proposes entries for the attorney to approve.
- Notes you type or dictate in a matter, such as "call with client re deposition prep, reviewed exhibit list"
- Emails you send from a matter or file to it, with the recipients and subject
- Documents you reviewed, redlined or drafted in Jural, with the time the work was open
- Research questions and chronology work done inside a matter
- Calendar events linked to a matter, such as hearings, depositions and client meetings
Narratives that survive a billing review
A good narrative says what was done and why, in language a client or an outside billing reviewer accepts. Jural writes each draft narrative in the firm's style: an active verb, the document or person involved, and the purpose, for example "Revise indemnification and limitation of liability provisions in master services agreement per client comments." Block billing is avoided by default, so a morning of mixed work becomes separate entries with separate durations.
Durations, increments and codes
Each draft carries a proposed duration rounded to the firm's increment, usually a tenth of an hour, with the evidence behind it shown next to the entry. For clients that require them, Jural suggests UTBMS task and activity codes, such as L120 for analysis and strategy or A104 for review and analysis, and the attorney can change any code before approval. Rates and billing arrangements stay in your billing system, so Jural sends hours, narratives and codes, not invoices.
From the day's work to an approved export step by step
- Work in your matters as usual, writing notes, sending emails and reviewing documents in Jural
- At the end of the day or week, open the draft entries list sorted by matter
- Each draft shows the narrative, the proposed duration, the codes and the activity it came from
- Approve, edit, merge, split or discard each draft, and add entries for work done outside Jural
- Approved entries lock with the approver name and time in the activity log
- Export approved entries for a date range as CSV or as a LEDES 1998B file for e-billing
- Import the file into your billing system, where rates, write-downs and invoices are handled
Nothing is billed without a person
Drafts are suggestions. They never leave Jural until an attorney approves them, and an approved entry cannot be edited silently afterwards: changes create a new version with the name of the person who made them. Firms that require partner review of associate time can route entries to a reviewer before export, so the supervising attorney sees the narrative before the client does.
Built around how lawyers actually record time
Some attorneys prefer to start a timer. Others write a sentence at the end of each task. Others reconstruct the whole week on Friday afternoon. Jural supports a running timer per matter, quick manual entries, and the draft list, and all three end up in the same approval queue and the same export. Entries carry the matter number, so they import into the right client and matter in your billing system.
What time tracking in Jural does not do
- It does not issue invoices or collect payments from clients. It exports approved time to the billing system you already use.
- It does not decide what is billable. The attorney approves, edits or discards every draft, and write-downs are your decision.
- It does not track activity outside Jural, such as phone calls on your mobile or work in other applications. Add those entries manually or from a note.
- It does not guarantee that a particular client or e-billing platform accepts a narrative or a code. Firm and client billing guidelines still apply.
- It does not monitor staff. Drafts are visible to the timekeeper and to reviewers the firm assigns, not to everyone.
Who records time with Jural
Associates use draft entries to catch the short tasks that never make it onto a timesheet. Partners use the reviewer queue to check narratives before they reach a general counsel with strict billing guidelines. Paralegals record their own time against the same matters. Billing coordinators use the LEDES 1998B export so they stop retyping entries from emails and spreadsheets. Solo attorneys use it because every recovered tenth of an hour is their own revenue.
Flat fees and contingency matters
Not every matter bills by the hour. On flat fee and contingency matters, attorneys still record time to understand profitability and, in some practices, to support a fee petition. Jural records those entries the same way and marks the matter's billing arrangement, so they export for internal reporting without appearing on a client invoice.
Time entries on every plan
Draft entries, the approval queue, CSV export and LEDES 1998B export are included in Solo, Firm and Enterprise. Firm adds per-matter access walls and shared firm templates for narratives. Enterprise adds custom roles for reviewers, audit log export and data retention controls. Yearly billing is the default and saves 50 percent: $24, $49 and $99 per user per month, with monthly billing at $49, $99 and $199. See ai legal assistant pricing.
